Bay leaves have always been considered a symbol of honor. The word "baccalaureate" means berries of laurel. They were given to physicians to impart to them the wisdom of the gods Apollo and Aesculapius who are associated with healing. The leaves were also known to induce prophetic dreams. Thus, the priestesses of Apollo chewed the leaves with that purpose.

It is a very protective herb. It is worn as an amulet to ward off evil. It is burned or scattered to protect against evil. Bay leaves are placed in the four corners of the house to protect against jinxes. The leaves are added to water that is used in rituals for purification. Bay leaves are burned with sandalwood to remove curses. It is used as an amulet to give strength to athletes and people that compete. Wishes are written on the leaves and then burned to make them come true.
