Frank and Myrrh resins are obtained from the sap of the Boswellia and Commiphora trees, respectively. Many ancient cultures used Frankincense and Myrrh during their religious ceremonies. Both fragrances are highly aromatic with frankincense producing a sweet citrus scent and myrrh producing a bitter herbal scent. To release the scent, both resins need to burned as incense or smoldered over a charcoal tablet.

History and Origin of Frankincense:

Frankincense was considered sacred and was traded in Middle East, Europe and Africa for over 6,000 years due to its medicinal and Spiritual properties. It was worth it more than gold. It is also known in Arabic as Olibanum. Most frankincense comes from North Africa and India, Oman, Yemen, and West Africa. The use of frankincense in religious ceremonies was used in Greece, Rome and Egypt as an offering to the deities but with the rise of Christianity the used diminished and became forbidden for being associated with paganism until it became included as part of the religious ceremonies of the Catholic Church. Frankincense was also used as an offering in memory of the deceased and to mask the odor the dead bodies. The Egyptian started using Frankincense during the embalming process of the dead bodies. The smoke produced by the resins was also used to repel insects an mosquitos. This golden resin was mentioned in the Bible during the birth of Christ. At the time that Jesus was born, it was said that the three wise men brought frankincense, myrrh and gold as a gift.

Myrrh comes from Somalia, Oman, Yemen, Eritrea, Ethiopia and parts of Saudi Arabia. The origin of the root of the word myrrh comes from the Arabic language meaning “bitter” . Myrrh is has been highly used in Ayurveda for its healing qualities treating rheumatism, nervous desirers and circulatory problems. Similar to Frankincense, Ancient Egyptian used Myrrh for the embalming of mummies and it was also mentioned in the Bible as a perfume, incense, as ingredient of the Sacred anointing oil and used in the temple service.
